A state of the art music department that has a range of the latest technology and a suite of 7 rooms conisting of:

A professional quality recording studio and control room containing the latest in computer based technology synchronised with a 32 track digital recorder.

A keyboard room with 6 keyboards and 6 dedicated digital recorders, with programmes of study for individual performance practice on keyboard and electric guitar.

Music ICT room with 6 PCs running Cubasis, Wavelab and Acid 4 Imacs running Garage Band and usual life software.

A group performance studio with virtual drums, a network computer, mixing desk, PA system and panio bass and guitar amps.

A small practice room with v drums and amplification.

Plus an instrumental tuition room with panio and hi-fi.

And finaly, a large rehersal / performance studio shared with Drama.

There is one full-time teacher and 5 part-time instrumental tutors. There is a Wind Band, a Choir and numerous smaller groups and bands.  The department organises regular Gig nights / discos where performers entertain their peers.  We also have Christmas and Spring performances.

There are regular Music Clubs:

  • Tuesday 15:30-16:30 Glee Club
  • Thursday 15:30-16:30 Band
  • Friday 13:30-14:00 String Ensemble

The school offers music at key stage 4 as either GCSE or Access to Music's Music Practitioner Qualifications or in some cases both.

It's also on a National pilot scheme, of only three schools, to offer the Award (smallest) of the Music Practioner Qualification to all students in year 9.

The department has it's own business unit and record label "Sound Basis" which records, produces and locally distributes CDs of the School's and other local musicians.  Its facilities are available for use by external clients and the profits are used to further resource the department.
